Communicating With Residency Programs After the Interview

Your residency interviews may be wrapping up, but your opportunity to make a good impression continues. While each residency program is unique and may have different expectations for post-interview contact, below you will find some best practices for interview follow-up.

✔ |
Reflect and Review |
| |
|
Keep track of your impressions, both good and bad, of the programs you visited.
|
| |
✔ |
Follow-up |
| |
|
Be quick to respond to any communication from the program.
|
| |
✔ |
Express Thanks |
| |
|
Take time to send authentic “thank you” notes referencing something specific about the program.
|
| |
✔ |
Rank Order List |
| |
|
Know that programs and applicants are prohibited from asking one another where they will be ranked.
|
| |
✔ |
Second Look |
| |
|
Take advantage of the opportunity for a “second look” interview only if you are seriously interested in the program.
|
| |
✔ |
Remain Calm |
| |
|
Stay on top of your deadlines and be prepared to participate in the NRMP’s Supplemental Offer and Acceptance Program® (SOAP®) if you don’t match. |
