ABMS Updated Guide to Medical Specialties

The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) released its 2019 edition of the ABMS Guide to Medical Specialties, which provides a comprehensive listing of the specialty certifications offered by the 24 ABMS Member Boards and descriptions of each specialty and subspecialty. The ABMS Member Boards assess the knowledge, skills, and judgement of physicians according to standards of practice set by the profession, and grant board certification to those physicians meeting and remaining current with the applicable requirements. More than 880,000 physicians in the United States are certified by one or more of the 24 ABMS Member Boards.

Lasker Essay Contest

The Lasker Essay Contest engages young scientists and clinicians from the United States and around the globe to engage in a discussion about biology and medicine and the role of biomedical research in our society today. The contest aims to build skills in communicating important medical and scientific issues to broad audiences.

Essay Topic: Outline an educational strategy that will increase interest in biomedical sciences among young men and women.

Eligibility: The contest is open to medical school students, interns, residents, and fellows; doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows in biomedical sciences; and graduate students in public health or other health professions programs. Applicants must be currently participating in an educational program. This program may be located in any country.

Prizes: First-place award is $10,000 and a trip (economy class travel and one-night hotel stay) to New York City to meet the 2019 Lasker Award winners (on September 20, 2019). Second- and third-place prizes are $5,000 and $2,500, respectively. All monetary prizes will be directed to the winner's university to be used toward the winner's educational expenses.

Deadline: April 11, 2019, 5:00 p.m., Eastern Daylight Time in the United States.

Accelerating Change in Medical Education Innovation Grant Program

The American Medical Association (AMA) Accelerating Change in Medical Education Innovation Grant Program will offer funding to AMA members for projects conducting research, implementing innovations or disseminating effective approaches in medical education aimed at preparing future physicians to succeed in the rapidly evolving U.S. health care system.

Projects demonstrating a direct, measurable, positive impact on medical education will be particularly competitive. Prior projects have included teaching and assessing principles of health systems science, student well-being, coaching, and incorporating new technologies.

At least 10, one-year grants will be issued to faculty investigators from MD-and DO-granting medical schools in the United States. Grant recipients are eligible to receive either $10,000 to support smaller projects or $30,000 to support larger, collaborative projects. Collaborations may take place within or across institutions and interprofessional teams.

Eligibility: Principal/lead investigators must hold an active, individual membership in the AMA.

Deadline: April 21, 2019,11:59 p.m., Central Time in the United States. Grants will start July 1, 2019.

ABMS 2019-2020 Visiting Scholars Program

The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) Research and Education Foundation is accepting applications for the 2019-2020 ABMS Visiting Scholars Program™.

The ABMS Visiting Scholars Program fosters research that informs physician assessment, initial and continuing certification, supports the development of next generation leaders, and helps build awareness about the value of board certification to external audiences.

The one-year, part-time program provides the ABMS Visiting Scholars with opportunities to:

  • Gain exposure to the fields of quality improvement, health care policy, physician assessment, and continuing professional development
  • Engage with national health care leaders and the Member Boards
  • Conduct research of value to their programs, organizations, and the certification community
  • Present and disseminate their research
  • Expand their professional networks

Eligibility: The Visiting Scholars Program is open to early career physicians, junior faculty, fellows, residents, and individuals holding a Master’s or Doctorate degree in public health, health services research, and public health policy and administration, or other relevant disciplines.

2019 American Conference on Physician Health (ACPH)
September 19 – 21, 2019 in Charlotte, NC
ACPH is a scientific conference sponsored jointly by the American Medical Association, Mayo Clinic, and Stanford University. The theme of the conference is “Activating health system change to promote physician well-being.”

The overarching goal of this joint scientific conference is to promote scientific research and discourse on the topic of the health care system infrastructure and what organizations can do to help combat burnout and promote well-being.

Call for Abstracts
Interested parties may submit their abstracts in one of two categories:

  • Research: submitted as either a poster or oral presentation
  • Workshop: submitted as an interactive session

All abstracts must be submitted on-line by March 29, 2019, 11:59 p.m. Central Time in the United States.

ChangeMedEd® 2019
September 18-21, 2019 in Chicago, IL
This fall join the American Medical Association at ChangeMedEd® 2019, a national conference bringing together innovative leaders from institutions across the medical education continuum to transform the way future physicians and residents are trained. This gathering of medical educators is a critical extension of the AMA “Accelerating Change in Medical Education” initiative and its important work to revolutionize medical education.
