Applying to a U.S. training program that begins in July 2020? If so, it's time to become familiar with the Electronic Residency Application Service® (ERAS). This issue of ECHO News highlights the ERAS resources available from ECFMG® as well as some important tips for ERAS 2020.

ERAS 2020: Program Information for IMGs

Detailed information for international medical graduates (IMGs) on participating in the upcoming ERAS application season is available on the ECFMG website. By visiting the ERAS section of the ECFMG website, you can:

  • Review the Application Process and Timeline.
  • View instructions on how to obtain an ERAS Token, which will enable you to register at the MyERAS website of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) and work on your residency applications.
  • Find instructions for submitting your supporting documents, such as letters of recommendation and transcripts.

ERAS 2020: Residency Tokens

Residency Tokens for the ERAS 2020 application season are available through ECFMG's On-line Applicant Status and Information System (OASIS) and the MyECFMG mobile app. You can use a 2020 Token to register at the MyERAS website of the AAMC and start working on your residency application.

ERAS 2020: Whom to Contact for What

IMGs who apply for U.S. residencies using ERAS interact with three different organizations. The role of each organization is explained in ECFMG's ERAS information for applicants. If you have questions, be sure to contact the appropriate organization. You can follow these organizations on Twitter for the latest news, tips, and announcements.

Applying to an Emergency Medicine program in ERAS 2020?

The AAMC Standardized Video Interview (SVI) is a required part of the application process for all applicants to Emergency Medicine residency programs accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The SVI does not replace in-person interviews. It is designed to provide program directors with objective, standardized information about applicants based on two ACGME competencies – Professionalism and Interpersonal and Communication Skills.

The deadline to complete the video interview is July 16, 2019, 11:59 p.m., Eastern Time in the United States.

For more information and resources, visit the AAMC Standardized Video Interview web page.

Get ready for the SVI with official interview preparation resources including tips, practice interviews, and webinars.

Attention Applicants to California Residency Programs

Effective January 1, 2020, the Postgraduate Training Authorization Letter (PTAL) will no longer be a requirement for IMGs entering training in California programs. Instead, all participating residents will apply for a Postgraduate Training License once they have secured a position in a program.

If you have already secured a PTAL from the Medical Board of California, you can upload the document through your OASIS account or the MyECFMG mobile app.

If you have not submitted an application for the PTAL, you do not need to do so.

For more information on this and other important changes, go to the Medical Board of California's Important Changes to Postgraduate Training and Licensing Requirements.

If you have questions about the new licensing requirements, please contact the Medical Board of California directly at [email protected] or (916) 263-2382.
